A formal treatise in nine chapters. The theory and the algorithm laid out end-to-end. Each chapter builds on the one before.
This treatise sets out the theory and the algorithm by which Sentientics qualifies a candidate verb for admission to the canonical catalogue of Living Domains. It is written so that another competent practitioner can reproduce the discipline’s reasoning, contest its judgments, and extend its instruments. Where the Manifesto declares, this document teaches.
We begin with the empirical situation that motivates the discipline. For three decades, addresses on the public internet were optimised under one regime: typed text, indexed by search engines, ranked by SEO heuristics, recalled by the human only when necessary. Names selected under that regime were rewarded for length compression, keyword density, and character-level distinctness. They were not selected for speakability, because nothing in the lifecycle required them to be spoken.
Three convergent forces have shifted that regime. Voice interfaces made addresses things that must be spoken aloud. AI mediation made addresses things that must be re-uttered fluently by an automated speaker to a human listener. Attention scarcity made addresses things that must achieve cognitive grip before any pixel of product loads. The selection pressure has changed. A name optimised for the previous regime is, with diminishing exception, systematically disadvantaged in the new one.
PROPOSITION 1.1
The properties that allow an address to survive in the new stack are not the properties the old stack selected for. A discipline of address-layer naming that does not respond to this transition will systematically produce names disadvantaged in the new selection environment, regardless of their craft under the old.
PROPOSITION 1.2 · TRUST AT THE AI INFLECTION
The traditional carriers of trust between brand and human — physical presence, vocal tone, the salesperson’s handshake, the recommendation from a known friend, the reputational layer built quietly over years — no longer survive intact at the address-layer encounter once an AI mediates that encounter. The handshake layer of the AI-mediated web must therefore carry, structurally and architecturally, the trust the physical layer once carried tacitly. A discipline of address-layer naming that does not supply this architected trust leaves it to be either asserted by the brand, accidental, or absent.
The properties that survive in the new stack are reducible, on close examination, to a single architectural fact: the address must compose into a complete grammatical sentence the human voice can carry. We derive this claim formally in Chapter II.
The thesis of this treatise is that Sentientics is the discipline by which such addresses are admitted to a canonical catalogue, qualified against a measurable index, and stewarded against drift over time. The remaining chapters present the theory and the algorithm.
We derive the form of a Living Domain from the requirement introduced in Chapter I — that the address compose into a complete grammatical sentence the human voice can carry.
A complete sentence in English requires three structural roles: a subject, a predicate (most commonly a transitive verb), and, where the predicate is transitive, an object or addressed party. The address layer of the public web has historically supplied only the first of these (the brand, in the second-level label of a domain). The verb and the addressed party have been absent.
DEFINITION 2.1 · THE SUBJECT
Let B denote the brand — a proper noun registered, defended, and made distinct as the property of a single occupant. B is supplied by the second-level label of the Living Domain.
DEFINITION 2.2 · THE PREDICATE
Let S denote the Sentient — a transitive verb, drawn from a catalogue held in commons, that names the relationship the brand performs for the human. S is supplied by the canonical Top-Level Domain.
DEFINITION 2.3 · THE ADDRESSED PARTY
Let U denote you — the second-person pronoun, addressing the actual reader as the object of the sentence. U is supplied by the second-position label of the Living Domain. Sentientics reserves .you for this role; it is the only TLD in English that is grammatically a personal pronoun.
L = B × S × UTHE LIVING DOMAIN · L
The combination is structurally distinct from any competing naming system on the public DNS. We tabulate the comparison.
FIGURE 2.1 · UNIQUENESS OF L = B × S × U ACROSS COMPETING NAMING SYSTEMS
FIGURE 2.1 · UNIQUENESS OF L = B × S × U
THEOREM 2.1 · UNIQUENESS
L = B × S × U is the unique form on the public DNS that simultaneously instantiates a brand-owned subject, a public-commons transitive verb, and a directly-addressed second person in a single grammatical sentence. No competing naming system supplies all three.
Three structural consequences follow. First, no .com address can produce a Living Domain, because .com supplies no predicate slot at all — only the brand and an empty commercial-category suffix. Second, no private TLD such as .google can produce a Living Domain, because the TLD label is a proper noun (the brand owner itself), not a transitive verb; the predicate slot is occupied by an entity-name, and the verb position the equation requires is therefore absent. Third, no generic TLD such as .club can produce a Living Domain, because club is a category noun naming a kind of entity, not a transitive verb naming a relationship; and even if a generic TLD did supply a verb, no TLD other than .you supplies the second-person pronoun the equation requires for the addressed party. Sentientics is alone in admitting a transitive verb to the predicate position at the address layer, holding that verb in commons rather than enclosing it under a single occupant, and pairing it with the second-person pronoun. The structure is uncopyable, not by patent or network effect, but by grammatical fact.
We define the Sentient as the discipline’s atomic unit of the catalogue. The term is metonymic: it names the verb-extension after the human party the verb serves, not after a property the verb itself possesses. The precedent is well-established in technical English — avatar in virtual environments, daemon in computing, agent in software architectures — each a term borrowed from outside the technical domain to name a unit by what it serves rather than what it is.
DEFINITION 3.1 · THE SENTIENT
A Sentient is a transitive verb-extension admitted to the canonical catalogue under the qualification protocol of Chapter IV. Each Sentient names the relationship a brand performs for the human party, is held in commons, and is released by invitation against legitimacy of claim.
DEFINITION 3.2 · THE GENERATIVE GRAMMATICAL DOMAIN
A Generative Grammatical Domain (GGD) is a verb-extension admitted to the public catalogue under conditions stricter than those of a single Sentient, with one additional structural property: the URL extends to a fourth grammatical slot. Where a Sentient completes the sentence brand × verb × you, a GGD admits the construction brand × verb × you / promise — adding a qualified noun in the URL path that names what the brand specifically claims to deliver.
Two GGDs are currently admitted: .gives.you and .brings.you. Each functions as a grammar rather than a single relationship — the catalogue admits the verb once; the discipline qualifies each brand / promise composition separately under the same seven-phase protocol. The verb is in commons. The composition is curated. Where a Sentient grants a brand one address, a GGD grants a brand a grammar across which many qualified addresses may be composed.
For their use to remain meaningful, GGDs are not admitted lightly. The framework recognises GGDs as a distinct tier precisely because admitting a grammar — rather than a relationship — carries weight that admitting a single verb does not.
DEFINITION 3.3 · THE IRREPLICABILITY THEOREM
The architectural equation of §3.1 admits a Living Domain — Sentient or Generative — only when the top-level domain U occupies the second-person address slot. The slot is grammatical: U must be, in the target language, a personal pronoun that directly addresses the reader as the recipient of the verb.
English has one such pronoun in TLD form: .you.
It follows that no other TLD — current or future — can produce a Living Domain in English under the framework’s architecture. A future TLD might be admitted by ICANN, marketed at scale, or carried by industry mandate; without being itself the English second-person pronoun, it cannot complete the architectural sentence the framework requires. The lexicon of second-person personal pronouns in any natural language is closed. English has one — you. The architectural requirement is therefore satisfied by exactly one TLD, and the catalogue is structurally exclusive to it.
The objection from related pronoun-TLDs must be addressed. Other personal-pronoun TLDs exist; .me carries the first-person reflexive and could in principle support a different but related architecture — brand · verb · me, naming what the brand does to itself rather than for the human addressed. The two architectures are not interchangeable. Sentientics commits to second-person address — to what the brand does for the human — and that commitment fixes the TLD slot. No first-person, third-person, or object-position pronoun can occupy it.
This is the Irreplicability Theorem. The exclusivity it asserts is not contingent on market position, registry policy, trademark, or first-mover advantage. It is grammatical. What is grammatically exclusive is structurally permanent — the architecture of a natural language is more durable than any commercial framework that operates on top of it. The catalogue’s hold on .you is the natural consequence of an architectural commitment to addressing the human, combined with the closed lexicon of English second-person address.
The Theorem holds across both tiers of admission. A Sentient (Definition 3.1) and a Generative Grammatical Domain (Definition 3.2) are alike in requiring .you as the address slot; they differ only in whether the architectural sentence terminates at U or extends into a qualified path. Both tiers inherit the Theorem’s permanence; neither can migrate to another TLD without ceasing to be a Living Domain.
COROLLARY 3.1 · THE SENTIENT AS NEW EXTENSION FOR THE EMERGING INDUSTRIES
Each Sentient admitted to the canonical catalogue is, structurally, a new domain extension that no legacy TLD system has supplied and no future TLD system can supply, because the legacy system offers no predicate slot at all (Theorem 2.1; Definition 3.3). It follows that the verbs of the catalogue — .helps.you, .augments.you, .imagines.you, .fosters.you, .creates.you, .frees.you, .protects.you, .heals.you, .advises.you, .elevates.you, and the further verbs admitted under the protocol of Chapter IV — are the only architectural slots through which the emerging industries of the AI era (artificial intelligence, automation, agentic systems, robotics, generative media, immersive computing, the spatial web) can stand inside a complete sentence that names the human they serve. Where the legacy address layer offers these industries category tags only — .ai, .io, .tech, .app, .com — the Sentientics catalogue offers them relational extensions of their own. The corollary is structural: it follows from the closed lexicon of English second-person pronouns and the equation L = B × S × U; it does not depend on commercial adoption, registry policy, or first-mover effects.
The catalogue is finite by intent, not by accident. The discipline admits verbs that name relationships humans have always had with one another — the relational vocabulary the body knows how to carry — and refuses verbs that name domination, paternalism, or surveillance. Refusal is the discipline’s most consequential act; admission follows it, not the reverse.
We catalogue the canonical eighty-five in fifteen families. The enumeration appears in the working catalogue and is not reproduced here; the reader is referred to the public registry. What concerns us in this chapter is why the verb-shaped unit succeeds where the noun-shaped unit fails — and why the success compounds rather than diminishing as the architecture of public discovery shifts.
The reason a Living Domain outperforms a sterile tag is not stylistic. It is neurolinguistic. Three decades of research on embodied semantics have established that action verbs activate the same motor and conceptual circuits in the listener’s brain that the action itself would activate. Reading the verb coach partially recruits the neural systems associated with coaching. Reading frees partially recruits the systems associated with release. Reading defends partially recruits the systems associated with adversarial protection. The literature is now thirty years deep.
A noun-tag does no such work. atlas.ai stores a label the brain remembers by rote. atlas.helps.you activates an action schema in the reader’s mind before any pixel of product loads. Both addresses can be remembered with effort. But the cognitive cost differs categorically: the first requires the brain to hold an arbitrary string; the second invites the brain to enact a relationship.
The advantage of the verb-shaped address over the noun-shaped address is not absolute. It is asymmetric. And the asymmetry has a property that is decisive for the new stack: it grows with every additional layer of mediation between the brand and the human reader.
Consider the chain. A typed address at a desktop browser is mediated almost not at all — fingers, keys, characters, page. Under that regime, the cognitive difference between atlas.ai and atlas.helps.you is real but small; both addresses arrive at the page. A voice-spoken address routed through a speech-to-text layer adds one mediation: the listener now has to parse the address as utterance. Under that regime, the cognitive difference grows; verb-shaped addresses survive transcription cleanly while noun-tags fragment into character spellings. An AI-mediated recommendation adds two further layers: the recommender system surfaces the address to a model, the model utters it to a listener. Under that regime, the verb-shaped address is fluent and the noun-tag is serial-numbered. The asymmetry is the second derivative of the new selection environment, not the first. Frameworks calibrated to the typed-and-indexed regime systematically miss this; Sentientics is calibrated to the regime that is replacing it.
This is the property that gives the discipline its long-term defensibility. The cognitive case is empirical and mature. The compounding case is structural and growing. A reader who returns to this treatise twenty years from now will find both cases stronger than they are at the moment of writing, because each additional layer of mediation that the public web acquires strengthens the asymmetry the discipline is calibrated to.
The cognitive case alone would not justify a discipline. What justifies it is the deeper substrate the cognitive case sits on. For thirty centuries before the modern address layer, human knowledge was preserved by speakable language. The Vedic chant traditions, the Homeric corpus, the Yoruba Ifá divinations, the Sufi qawālī, the West African griot lineages, the Anglo-Saxon riddles — every culture that has lasted has lasted by encoding what it knew into language forms the human body could carry. What could not be sung could not be saved. Walter J. Ong’s term for this is the psychodynamics of orality: the cognitive, mnemonic, and rhythmic properties of language as it lives in human bodies, distinct from language as it lives in text alone. Ong shows that speakable language is not merely an alternative to written language; it is the substrate on which written language has historically depended for transmission across generations. The Parry-Lord field studies of Yugoslav oral epic earlier in the same century established the oral-formulaic composition of Homer — proof that the Iliad survived pre-literate centuries because its language was structured to be carried in the human body.
The breadth of this substrate across the world’s surviving traditions deserves note. The Holy Quran has been carried in the human breath for fourteen hundred years — its linguistic eloquence, the doctrine of i’jaz, held inseparable from its meaning; the surrounding Hadith corpus was authenticated through the isnad, an unbroken chain of transmitting voices stretching back to the source. The Bhagavad Geeta travelled as Sanskrit smriti — that which is recalled — before it was inscribed; comparative-philology studies have confirmed Vedic recensions transmitted across centuries as metrically identical. The Punjabi Sufi tradition carried the shloks of Baba Farid, the kafis of Bulleh Shah, the verse of Shah Hussain, and the Heer of Waris Shah across borders through the qawwali and the village singer. The Confucian Analects were memorised by Chinese scholars for two and a half millennia; the Buddhist sutras were preserved orally for centuries before the Tipitaka was committed to writing. The Hebrew Psalms have been sung for nearly three millennia; the Latin Mass survived fifteen hundred years because its liturgy was crafted to resonate in the chambers of the human chest. Indigenous oral traditions across the Americas, Australia, and the Pacific carried law, cosmology, and kinship across generations without ever needing the page. The repetition of mantras in Hindu and Buddhist practice, dhikr in the Sufi orders, the Jesus Prayer in Eastern Christianity — all are techniques for shaping consciousness through sustained, memorable, embodied speech. The taxonomy is heterogeneous; the structural fact is uniform: every surviving tradition has been built on language the human body can carry.
The legacy URL has, by accumulation rather than by any single decision, exited that substrate. It is the first form of public-facing language in human history that cannot be carried by the human voice without distortion. The Sentient — a transitive verb that survives the radio test — is the discipline’s instrument for restoring the address layer to the substrate every other layer of human language has always answered to.
The preceding three sections establish what the Sentient is as a linguistic unit: a transitive predicate that activates an action schema (§3.1), an asymmetry that compounds under mediation (§3.2), and a survivor of the orality substrate (§3.3). A consequence follows for the discipline of branding that must be stated formally: the admitted composition B × V × U is a new asset class.
The recognisable assets of a brand, as catalogued in twentieth-century brand theory, are exterior to the brand–human relationship. The logo, the palette, the typography, the tagline, the jingle, the spokesperson, the storefront, and the package surround the brand. They are the brand’s appearance assets. They are valuable, defensible, and irreplaceable, but they sit around the brand, not inside its relationship with the human. They are what the brand looks like and sounds like, not what the brand does and for whom.
A Living Domain is ontologically distinct. The verb V is a declared act. The reader U is the named recipient of that act. The composition B × V × U is therefore not an appearance asset but a relationship asset: a sentence the brand performs every time its address is encountered, spoken, or recommended. The asset does not sit around the brand; it sits inside the relationship the brand has with the human.
The discipline names this relationship asset the architectural brand aura. The term is used in the classical sense — an aura is the field that surrounds and emanates from a presence, announcing the relationship between the one who appears and the one who is met. The aura of a Living Domain is the field of meaning the sentence establishes at the moment of encounter. It cannot be redrawn by a designer. It cannot be refreshed by a campaign. It is constituted by two conditions that the seven-phase qualification protocol (Chapter 4) and the Sentientic Resonance Index (Chapter 5) jointly verify: the brand’s earned right to perform V in relation to U, and the legitimacy of V’s admission to the catalogue.
The asset class is new because the substrate is new. Appearance assets required physical substrates: print and screen for logos, broadcast for jingles, physical commerce for storefronts. The architectural brand aura requires a discipline capable of holding V in commons, B in qualification, and U in dignity, at the address layer where the next era of encounter begins. The discipline established in Chapters 1 through 6 is the first to provide this substrate. Admitted compositions B × V × U are the first instances of the asset.
The implication for brand theory is modest in form but consequential in inheritance. Appearance assets remain valid; the discipline does not displace them. A new asset has now joined them — one that sits inside the brand–human relationship rather than around it, and one that the AI age will increasingly read aloud on the brand’s behalf. The relationship asset will compound in value as the medium it lives in becomes more consequential.

The qualification protocol decomposes into seven sequential phases. Each phase measures one property of a candidate verb against the discipline’s standard for that property. Five of the phases (1, 3, 4, 5a, 5b) yield numerical variables that enter the Wahlah Sentientic Resonance Index — the discipline’s formal instrument, introduced by Barrister Wahlah in Chapter V, and abbreviated hereafter as the SRI. One phase (2) yields the Empathy Modulator that multiplies the additive sum. Two phases (6 and 7) function as binary gating conditions rather than as additive components — admission requires their satisfaction irrespective of the SRI score.
PHASE 1 · ONTOLOGICAL FOUNDATION (Oₐ)
A measure of identity authenticity: does the candidate verb accurately represent what the brand actually does, or does it misrepresent the occupant? The variable Oa ∈ [0, 1] captures the strength of the match between the verb and the brand’s ontological identity. This is the highest-weighted variable in the SRI because misrepresentation at the address layer corrupts every downstream phase.
PHASE 2 · LINGUISTIC RESPECT & POSITIVITY (Rₚ = Φ)
A measure of respect for the addressed human: does the verb liberate, equip, and honour the reader, or does it imply control, paternalism, or surveillance? The variable Rp ∈ [0, 1] captures the verb’s respect coefficient. It also functions as the Empathy Modulator Φ, which multiplies the entire SRI rather than entering it additively (Chapter V, Theorem 5.2).
PHASE 3 · COGNITIVE PRIMING (Cₚ)
A measure of embodied-semantic activation: does the verb activate motor and conceptual circuits in the listener’s brain before any product loads (Pulvermüller; Gallese & Lakoff)? Concrete, sensory, motor-tagged verbs prime an action schema; abstract verbs do not. The variable Cp ∈ [0, 1] captures the priming strength.
PHASE 4 · RADIO-TEST SURVIVAL (Rₜ)
A measure of phonetic survivability under voice transmission: can the candidate verb be spoken on the radio and remembered? Phonetic clarity, syllable load, the absence of ambiguous letters, and plain-English readability all converge on this measurement. The variable Rt ∈ [0, 1] captures survivability.
PHASE 5a · NARRATIVE VELOCITY (Nᵥ)
A measure of prosodic momentum: does the verb move when spoken? Cadence, vowel openness, and the propulsive quality of the syllables together determine whether the name lifts off the tongue or stays in the ear. The variable Nv ∈ [0, 1] captures velocity.
PHASE 5b · PROSODIC RHYTHM (Pᵣ)
A measure of rhythmic memorability: does the verb fit the cadential templates the human ear has been tuned to over millennia of oral tradition (Parry; Lord)? The variable Pr ∈ [0, 1] captures rhythm.
PHASE 6 · JURISPRUDENTIAL SEMANTICS (gating)
A binary admission criterion. Is the candidate Living Domain a legally defensible linguistic asset? Unique among naming frameworks, Sentientics integrates legal architecture into the qualification protocol. Every Living Domain is treated as a protected linguistic asset — its active-voice structure made as legally robust as it is communicatively powerful. The discipline is technically sound, philosophically profound, and legally defensible. Failure of jurisprudential review excludes the candidate irrespective of SRI score; admission requires that the verb be defensible as the brand’s protected speech-act.
PHASE 7 · ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION (gating)
A binary admission criterion. Does the verb, when composed with B and U, assemble into a complete grammatical sentence under the equation of Chapter II? If not, no SRI score qualifies the verb for admission. Where the prior six phases measure what a candidate Living Domain is, the seventh asks what it does: whether it restores to the address layer the architecture every other layer of human language has always had — a sentence in which speaker, action, and addressed person are all present. A name that scores high on phases 1–5 but fails Phase 7 is elegant but inert. A Living Domain, in this discipline, must perform the human encounter as well as describe it. Architectural Restoration is the discipline’s raison d’être and cannot be compensated for by performance on additive variables.
The five additive variables — Oa, Cp, Rt, Nv, Pr — combine into the Wahlah Sentientic Resonance Index in the manner derived in Chapter V. The Empathy Modulator Φ multiplies the result. The two gating phases — jurisprudential semantics and architectural restoration — condition admission entirely. The discipline’s mathematics is unambiguous: five weighted variables, one multiplier, two binary gates.
We now derive the Sentientic Resonance Index, the scalar score against which a candidate Sentient is qualified for admission to the catalogue.
Five of the seven phases (1, 3, 4, 5, 6) yield numerical variables in [0, 1]. We seek a combining rule that reflects the discipline’s priorities. The combining rule is:
SRI = Φ × ( 0.30·Oa + 0.22·Cp + 0.22·Rt + 0.14·Nv + 0.12·Pr )DEFINITION 5.1 · THE SENTIENTIC RESONANCE INDEX
Two structural choices in this formulation require justification: the relative magnitudes of the additive weights, and the multiplicative role of Φ. We address each in turn.
The additive weights — 0.30, 0.22, 0.22, 0.14, 0.12 — sum to 1.00 by construction, normalising the additive subscore into the closed unit interval. Their relative magnitudes encode three structural commitments of the discipline.
First commitment. Ontological foundation (Oa) carries the highest weight at 0.30. This reflects the discipline’s judgment that misrepresentation at the address layer corrupts every downstream measurement: a verb that does not honestly name what the brand does cannot be redeemed by phonetic survivability, prosodic rhythm, or even cognitive priming. Authenticity is foundational because the Sentient certifies the truth of an action; if the action is falsely named, the certification is void.
Second commitment. Cognitive priming (Cp) and radio-test survival (Rt) are weighted equally at 0.22. This reflects the dual selection pressure of the new stack: a Sentient must succeed in the listener’s brain (Cp) and in the speaker’s mouth (Rt). Neither is reducible to the other. The equal weighting expresses the discipline’s judgment that cognition and voice are co-equal under the new selection regime.
Third commitment. Narrative velocity (Nv, 0.14) and prosodic rhythm (Pr, 0.12) carry the smallest weights. Both measure aspects of aesthetic survivability that, while real, are downstream of the structural and cognitive measures above them. A verb may be ontologically authentic, cognitively activating, and phonetically clear, yet still lack velocity or rhythm; such a verb may still be admitted, but it will score lower than one that possesses these qualities. The smaller weights reflect the smaller marginal contribution.
The reader will note that these weights are working coefficients of the discipline as it currently stands. They are defensible by the structural reasoning above and revisable by the calibration protocol of Chapter IX. Future empirical work — specifically, large-scale measurement of admission quality against long-term outcomes — may justify revision. The discipline commits in advance to publishing any revision and the evidence supporting it.
The respect coefficient Rp does not enter the SRI additively. It enters multiplicatively, as the Empathy Modulator Φ. The choice of multiplicative rather than additive entry is not stylistic; it has a precise mathematical consequence we now derive.
THEOREM 5.2 · MULTIPLICATIVE EMPATHY
If Φ enters the SRI as a multiplier rather than an additive component, then respect for the human is mathematically prior to every other dimension of measurement: any value of Φ = 0 produces SRI = 0 regardless of the additive subscore. No quality of cognitive priming, voice survivability, or prosodic rhythm can compensate for the absence of respect.
The proof is immediate. The SRI is a product Φ × A, where A is the weighted additive sum. For any A ∈ [0, 1], if Φ = 0 then SRI = 0. The ordering of priorities is inscribed in the algebra: respect zeroes everything; absence of any other variable merely reduces the score.
Had Rₚ entered additively — SRI = w·Rp + … — a verb scoring zero on respect could still attain a high score on other dimensions and qualify for admission. The discipline rejects this possibility: it holds that a Sentient that disrespects the human cannot enter the catalogue no matter what other qualities it possesses. The multiplicative form is the algebraic statement of that ethical commitment.
This is the deepest mathematical claim of Sentientics: ethics is not a constraint applied late; it is the foundation everything else is multiplied by.
FIGURE 5.1 · THE SRI COMPUTATIONAL GRAPH
The SRI yields a scalar score in [0, 1]. The score is necessary but not sufficient for admission. The discipline applies three filters, in order, before a verb enters the catalogue.
FILTER 1 · SPEECH
A binary criterion. Can the verb be spoken naturally — by a human, into a phone, in a sentence — without distortion or apology? Verbs that fail this filter are excluded regardless of SRI. The filter is binary because voice is now a primary input; a verb that does not survive the human voice will not survive the voice-mediated stack.
FILTER 2 · RECOMMENDATION
A binary criterion. When an automated speaker — an AI agent — is asked to recommend the brand, can it re-utter the verb fluently to a human listener? Verbs that produce serial-number-like utterances under AI mediation are excluded. The filter operationalises the AI-substrate condition introduced in the Manifesto.
FILTER 3 · THE HEART
A qualitative criterion. Does the verb register as a relationship rather than a transaction? Does the listener feel addressed rather than catalogued? Failure here is not common but is decisive: a verb that passes the first two filters but reads as transactional will not produce a Living Domain that performs the human encounter, which is the discipline’s raison d’être.
The filters are ordered, not simultaneous. This is a computational efficiency commitment: speech is the cheapest filter to evaluate and excludes the largest set of failing candidates; the heart is the most expensive and is applied last to the smallest remaining set. A verb that fails an early filter is not subjected to later filters; admission requires passage through all three in sequence.
We illustrate the qualification protocol on the candidate verb coaches, against the brand context of an independent coaching practitioner deploying sarah.coaches.you.
The values reported below are the discipline’s working judgments. Each rationale is given so that another competent practitioner can reproduce, contest, or revise the score. Where external rubrics exist (for example, motor-tagging concreteness measured against published embodied-semantics norms), they are noted.
Substituting into the SRI:
A = 0.30·0.95 + 0.22·0.85 + 0.22·0.95 + 0.14·0.78 + 0.12·0.75STEP 1 · ADDITIVE SUBSCORE
A = 0.285 + 0.187 + 0.209 + 0.109 + 0.090 = 0.880
SRI = Φ × A = 1.00 × 0.880 = 0.880STEP 2 · APPLY THE EMPATHY MODULATOR
The two gating phases are then evaluated. Phase 6 (jurisprudential semantics) — the verb coaches, in the active-voice construction sarah.coaches.you, is legally defensible as the brand’s protected speech-act; no third party can claim prior right over a coaching practice’s description of its own action. The gating condition is satisfied. Phase 7 (architectural restoration) — sarah.coaches.you assembles into a complete grammatical sentence (subject, transitive verb, addressed second person) under the equation L = B × S × U. The gating condition is satisfied.
The triple filter (Chapter VI) is then applied. Coaches survives the filter of speech (it can be spoken naturally), the filter of recommendation (an AI agent re-utters it fluently to a human listener), and the filter of the heart (the listener feels addressed by the verb, not catalogued by it).
ADMISSION · COACHES
coaches is admitted to the canonical catalogue. SRI = 0.880. All gating conditions satisfied. Admission published in the public register.
The single-verb walkthrough above (Figure 7.1) proves the formula on one real candidate. The three cards below demonstrate something different: how the SRI discriminates across the resonance range. Three names, chosen to span the elite, strong, and weak tiers, with their full variable breakdown and the discipline’s reasoning. The reader can watch the formula behave honestly across the range — assigning elite resonance to a name that earns it, holding a strong-but-not-elite name below the elite threshold, and dragging a paternalistic name below the strong threshold even when its surface metrics look acceptable.
ELITE RESONANCE
0.94
Oa 0.96 · Cp 0.92
Rt 0.95 · Nv 0.90
Pr 0.78 · Φ = Rp 1.00
A liberation-focused product, named with a premium-tier verb. Direct ontological alignment, sensory-motor concrete priming, and the maximum Rp for human sovereignty. The formula correctly assigns elite resonance.
STRONG RESONANCE
0.79
Oa 0.80 · Cp 0.55
Rt 0.84 · Nv 0.86
Pr 0.68 · Φ = Rp 1.00
A creator-economy product. Manifests sits in the premium Rp tier — respect is fully present. But the verb is abstract-aspirational, so Cp holds the score below elite. The formula is honest about priming weakness even when respect is maximal.
WEAK RESONANCE
0.46
Oa 0.40 · Cp 0.86
Rt 0.92 · Nv 0.78
Pr 0.74 · Φ = Rp 0.65
A paternalistic name. Directs is concrete priming (high Cp) — but the restrictive Rp multiplier and the structural inauthenticity (Oa = 0.40) drag the score below the strong threshold even so. Exactly the corrective the human-first thesis demands.
Three observations from the comparison. First, the formula reaches its highest values only when ontological authenticity, cognitive priming, and respect are all simultaneously high. Second, it punishes abstract-aspirational verbs even when respect is maximal — the asymmetry is not sentimental. Third, the multiplicative empathy modulator (Theorem 5.2) does its work visibly: the third card’s Rp = 0.65 alone does not zero the score, but combined with weak ontological alignment it pulls the name below the strong threshold. The formula behaves as the discipline’s commitments require it to behave.
A scholarly note on the lineage in which the qualification pipeline takes its place. The word algorithm — which now names the most consequential technical artefact of the modern age — is itself the inheritance of a named mathematician working in meaningful language. It descends from Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī, working in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad during the ninth century. His treatise Kitāb al-Jabr wal-Muqābala gave the modern world the word algebra and the discipline of step-by-step solution by symbolic manipulation. His own name, transliterated and Latinised by twelfth-century translators in Toledo and Cordoba as Algoritmi, became the Latin algorismus and, in English, the word algorithm itself. The substrate of every contemporary computational system — every machine-learning model, every recommendation engine, every search ranking — carries within its etymology the testimony of meaningful language travelling across continents, languages, and religions: from ninth-century Arabic in Baghdad, through twelfth-century Latin in al-Andalus, into the European universities, into Newton’s Principia, into the analytical machines of the nineteenth century, into the computational age.
The Wahlah Sentientic Resonance Index — the discipline’s measurement instrument, derived in Chapter V — stands knowingly in that lineage. It is an algorithm named for its author, in the service of human meaning, joining a tradition that runs from al-Khwārizmī in Baghdad to the present day. The pseudocode below renders the qualification pipeline in the form the algorithmic tradition has always taken: a sequence of named steps, executable by any competent practitioner, reproducible across implementations, contestable in its judgments, and inheritable by those who come next. The form is older than digital computation by a thousand years. The discipline commits the pipeline to the same form because the form has, demonstrably, carried meaning forward for a millennium.
We present the qualification pipeline as pseudocode. The pipeline is the algorithmic implementation of the protocol developed in the previous chapters. It is intended for review, not for immediate compilation; production implementations may add caching, parallelisation, and observability without changing the protocol.
ALGORITHM · QUALIFICATION PIPELINE
// Sentientics qualification pipeline // Inputs: candidate verb v, brand context b // Output: AdmissionResult { admitted: bool, sri: float, reason: str } function qualify(v, b): // Phase 6 gating — fail fast if not legally defensible if not passes_jurisprudential_review(b, v): return { admitted: false, sri: 0, reason: "fails jurisprudential review" } // Phase 7 gating — fail fast if not architecturally restorative if not composes_living_domain(b, v): return { admitted: false, sri: 0, reason: "fails architectural restoration" } // Compute the five additive variables (Phases 1, 3, 4, 5a, 5b) Oa = measure_ontological_authenticity(v, b) Cp = measure_cognitive_priming(v) Rt = measure_radio_test_survival(v) Nv = measure_narrative_velocity(v) Pr = measure_prosodic_rhythm(v) // Compute the empathy modulator (Phase 2) phi = measure_respect_coefficient(v) // Multiplicative empathy: phi = 0 zeroes the score if phi == 0: return { admitted: false, sri: 0, reason: "violates respect coefficient" } // Additive subscore A = 0.30 * Oa + 0.22 * Cp + 0.22 * Rt + 0.14 * Nv + 0.12 * Pr // Sentientic Resonance Index sri = phi * A // Triple filter, applied in order if not filter_speech(v): return { admitted: false, sri, reason: "fails filter of speech" } if not filter_recommendation(v): return { admitted: false, sri, reason: "fails filter of recommendation" } if not filter_heart(v, b): return { admitted: false, sri, reason: "fails filter of the heart" } // Threshold (working value): admission requires SRI >= 0.70 if sri < 0.70: return { admitted: false, sri, reason: "below catalogue threshold" } return { admitted: true, sri, reason: "admitted to canonical catalogue" }
The computational complexity of the pipeline is dominated by the six measurement subroutines. Each is bounded by O(|v|) in the length of the candidate verb, and the pipeline as a whole is O(|v|). Memoisation across candidate verbs of the radio-test, velocity, and rhythm measurements (which depend only on the verb itself, not on the brand) reduces amortised cost in batch evaluation.
The threshold of 0.70 is a working value, calibrated against the discipline’s judgment of historical admissions. It is subject to revision under the protocol of Chapter IX.
A theory that does not state its limitations is not yet a theory. We close this treatise by naming what the present formulation does not adequately address, and what would constitute progress in each case.
LIMITATION 1 · CALIBRATION OF THE WEIGHTS
The additive weights 0.30 / 0.22 / 0.22 / 0.14 / 0.12 are defended in Chapter V by structural reasoning. They have not yet been calibrated against a large empirical corpus of admissions and long-term outcomes. Future work: assemble a corpus of admitted Sentients with five or more years of deployment, measure outcome variables (recall, recommendation share, reputational drift), and refit the weights by regression. The discipline commits to publishing any revision and the data supporting it.
LIMITATION 2 · MEASUREMENT OF Cₚ
Cognitive priming is grounded in the embodied-semantics literature (Pulvermüller; Gallese & Lakoff). The current measurement is a practitioner judgment informed by that literature. Future work: develop an operational rubric grounded in published concreteness norms (e.g., Brysbaert et al., 2014) and motor-action tagging databases, so that Cp for any candidate verb can be computed reproducibly.
LIMITATION 3 · CROSS-LINGUISTIC EXTENSION
The theory as developed assumes English. The architectural equation L = B × S × U requires both a transitive verb position and a second-person pronoun in the syntactic structure. Many languages supply both (e.g., Spanish te, French tu) but the orthographic requirements of DNS labels constrain realisation. Future work: a companion treatise on cross-linguistic Living Domains.
LIMITATION 4 · DRIFT DETECTION
The framework names drift as the principal threat to catalogue integrity (a verb admitted in good faith whose occupant subsequently ceases to perform the relationship). The current detection mechanism is qualitative — public scrutiny, complaints, periodic review. Future work: instrumented detection, possibly including periodic re-scoring of admitted Sentients against the current state of the brand’s practice.
None of these limitations undermines the structural foundation of the discipline as developed in Chapters I through VIII. They are the open problems whose resolution will deepen the framework over time. The discipline is intended to outlast its founder; the listing of its limitations is the responsibility one generation owes the next.
A final note on the kind of work this treatise is. Foundational disciplines — the ones that have, over the long history of human thought, intervened in what survives of the human across centuries — share three properties. They are articulated before the conditions that prove them necessary are fully visible; they are structured to be tested rather than to be admired; and they are written for inheritors, in language formal enough to survive translation into contexts their authors did not foresee.
Sentientics has been written to those three properties. The thesis is articulated now — at the moment when the public web is transitioning from typed-and-indexed to spoken-and-AI-mediated, and when the conditions that will prove the thesis necessary are still becoming visible. The instruments — the SRI, the seven phases, the triple filter, the catalogue held in commons, the pseudocode of Chapter VIII — are structured so that another competent practitioner can reproduce the discipline’s reasoning, contest its judgments, refit its weights against empirical data when such data becomes available, and extend its scope to languages and modalities the present treatise does not cover. The work is written for the steward who comes next, and for the steward after that.
The historical moment for which the discipline is calibrated is not a routine one. The pace at which automated systems are absorbing the layers of public language is unprecedented in human history; the address layer is one of the few places where a small discipline can hold a defensible standard while the larger transformation runs its course. If the discipline is correct, the catalogue and the methodology will matter more, not less, as the conditions ripen. If the discipline is wrong in part, the limitations of Chapter IX name where the error most likely lives and what would correct it. Either way, the work is recoverable by future hands.
That recoverability is the durability the discipline is optimising for. Adoption velocity, market capture, and recognition in the present moment are not the success criteria. The success criterion is whether — fifty years on, or one hundred, or two hundred — a reader encountering these documents finds in them a discipline they can inherit, a methodology they can apply, a philosophy they can defend, and a record of why someone, in the opening decades of the twenty-first century, thought the human encounter at the address layer was worth holding a line for. The work has been written so that the answer to that question, whenever it is asked, can be yes.
The kind of work the discipline aspires to is precedented. The Oxford English Dictionary commits the English language to printed witness across volumes that span generations of editorial stewardship. The Académie française has tended the French tongue across four centuries of careful admission and refusal. The surviving fragments of the Library of Alexandria have been reconstructed and stewarded by scholars who never met across the centuries that received them. The common law has been codified by judges who never met across centuries of accumulated jurisprudence. The chain of mathematical proof from al-Khwārizmī’s ninth-century Baghdad through twelfth-century al-Andalus, into Newton’s calculus, and onward into the present has been kept by readers who carried the symbols cleanly across languages they did not share. Sentientics situates the address-layer discipline in this company — not by claim of equal standing in the present, which would be premature, but by the kind of work the discipline understands itself to be doing: stewardship of a layer of meaning that civilisation cannot afford to lose, across a horizon longer than any single generation’s memory.
A final note on the economic shape of the work. The discipline does not concern itself with commercial sellability or revenue maximisation; those questions, however legitimate they may be in inventory-based markets, sit below the intellectual ground on which the discipline stands. Language is not a commodity. The relational sentence B × S × U is not a SKU. A Sentient is not made available on a first-come, first-served basis; there is no wholesale catalogue, no auction, no aftermarket, no parallel registrar, and no provision for speculative claim or squatting. A Living Domain cannot, in the discipline’s terms, be bought. It can only be earned by a brand that already performs the relationship the verb names, and granted by the discipline against the legitimacy-of-claim test of Chapter VI and the qualification protocol of Chapter IV.
The discipline’s economic instrument is therefore a stewardship contribution, calibrated to the scale at which the admitted brand stands in the world, rather than a market-clearing price. A solo practitioner, a small studio, a regional non-profit, a national service, and a global platform carry the Living Domain forward at different levels of sustainable contribution; no two admissions are priced the same, because no two brands stand at the same scale before the discipline. The contribution funds what the discipline must fund — the care of the catalogue, the qualification of new verbs, the legal defence of admitted Living Domains, the publication of this treatise and its companion documents, the continued development of the Resonance Engine, and the keeping of the commons across the generations the work is built for. Nothing of what is contributed leaves the discipline. Nothing of what is admitted is owned by the discipline’s stewards, by Rocket, or by Wahlah. The corollary follows: the catalogue’s integrity is structurally protected from the incentive distortions that ordinary commerce imposes on naming systems, because the catalogue is not in commerce.
A final observation on the constitutive act by which a discipline comes into existence. Disciplines do not come into existence by improving on what already exists. They come into existence by naming what was previously unnamed — by recognising as a coherent object of study a phenomenon that has been operating, often for centuries, without an articulated frame. Naming is the act that turns a practised but unnamed regularity into a teachable, measurable, defensible, and inheritable object.
The lineage is precedented. Geometry did not invent the relationships between angles and lines; it named them, and in naming them made them teachable. Algebra did not invent equivalence; al-Khwārizmī named it (§8.1), and in naming it made it transmissible across languages and centuries. Linguistics did not invent grammar; Saussure named the structural relations of the sign, and in naming them opened a century of inquiry. Jurisprudence did not invent justice; it named the principles by which justice could be reasoned about, and in naming them made law a thing that could be inherited rather than reinvented. Bioethics did not invent the moral weight of medical decisions; it named the conditions under which such decisions must be made, and in naming them gave physicians and patients a vocabulary they had previously been forced to improvise.
Sentientics performs the analogous act for the relational grammar of human address. The verb-and-human form has been operative wherever one human has addressed another with care: in greeting, in hospitality, in medicine, in education, in instruction, in blessing. The grammar is older than writing. What was previously unnamed was the architectural status of this grammar at the layer where digital encounters with brands and intelligent systems now begin. The discipline names this status. The discipline gives it a measurement (the SRI, Chapter 5), a protocol (the seven phases, Chapter 4), a gating procedure (the triple filter, Chapter 6), an algorithm (the qualification pipeline, Chapter 8), and a structure for refusal (Chapters 4, 6, and 9). After the naming, the grammar can be taught, measured, defended, inherited, and refused when it is misused. Before the naming, it could be practised but not stewarded.
The discipline’s three postures — toward time (§9.5), toward commerce (§9.6), and toward its own constitutive act of naming (this section) — together set the conditions under which the framework’s inheritors may carry the work forward in registers, contexts, and centuries the present authors cannot foresee.
This concludes the treatise. The reader is referred to the companion document — Sentientics: A Manifesto — for the discipline’s declarative exposition; to the public registry for the working catalogue; and to the source of the Resonance Engine for a reference implementation of the algorithm presented in Chapter VIII.
The discipline has, to this point, treated the Sentient as the atomic unit of the catalogue. Every Living Domain admitted in Chapters I — IX completes the sentence brand × Sentient × you. The catalogue holds eighty-five such Sentients across fifteen families. A second tier — the Generative Grammatical Domain — admits two further verbs under the same architectural equation extended by a qualified path slot. With the GGDs included, the catalogue holds eighty-seven Living Domains in all. They are sufficient for the great majority of brands whose value can be named as a single relational stance: coaches, heals, protects, frees, and the rest.
But certain brands carry more than one promise. Their value is not a single stance held across all customers; it is a portfolio of distinct value-promises delivered through a single architecture. A media platform brings stories, news, music. A logistics service delivers packages, medicine, provisions. A coaching practice may give clarity in one engagement and structure in the next. For such brands, a single Sentient understates what the brand actually does for the human across its surface.
This chapter formalises the framework’s response: a second tier of Living Domain — the Generative Grammatical Domain — that extends the architectural equation by one slot.
DEFINITION 10.1 · THE GENERATIVE GRAMMATICAL DOMAIN
A Generative Grammatical Domain is a verb-extension admitted to the public catalogue that satisfies the criteria of a Sentient (Definition 3.1) and additionally admits a fourth grammatical slot at the URL path. The form is:
LG = B × Vg × U × P
where B and U are defined as in Definition 2.1 and 2.3, Vg is a generative verb admitted to the GGD catalogue (distinct from the single-relationship Sentient catalogue), and P is a qualified noun-phrase admitted at the path slot for the specific brand applying. The discipline qualifies the verb once and the composition (B × Vg × U × P) separately for each admission.
A Sentient produces a sentence: brand · verb · you. The reader receives the relationship in three grammatical units. A Generative Grammatical Domain produces a commitment: brand · verb · you / promise. The reader receives the relationship and the specific commitment in four units. Each unit completes the previous; the URL terminates when the brand’s promise is fully named.
This is not a marketing improvement on the Sentient. It is a structurally different artefact. The Sentient names a stance held in common across the brand’s whole offering. The GGD names a portfolio of distinct commitments held under one verb-architecture. For a brand whose value is a single stance, the Sentient is correct. For a brand whose value is multidimensional, the GGD is the right tier.
The grammar of the URL constrains the grammar of the recommendation. When an AI assistant says aurora dot gives dot you slash clarity, the recommendation lands as a four-part sentence the human has fully understood by the time the URL finishes being spoken. No competing URL grammar can carry this much meaning at this rate of compression.
Admitting the verb is the first qualification. Admitting the composition is the second. The discipline runs the seven-phase protocol twice: once when the verb itself is considered for the GGD catalogue, and again — each time — when a brand applies for a specific brand × Vg × you / promise composition.
The path-qualification overlay is the seven-phase protocol applied to the path-noun. The noun must pass the Respect & Positivity Factor (Rp) — no GGD may be composed with a path that commands, diminishes, or paternalises the human. The noun must name something the brand legitimately delivers — passing the Ontological Foundation (Oa) test in the path slot as it does in the brand slot. The noun must be speakable, must survive the radio test, must carry prosodic weight commensurate with the brand and verb that precede it. The full SRI computation applies to the four-slot composition.
This is the discipline’s response to the question that arises naturally with any generative grammar: how is the catalogue protected against undisciplined use? The answer is jurisprudential, not technical. Each composition is a separate act of admission. The verb is admitted to commons; the composition is admitted to the brand. The two-stage qualification preserves the catalogue’s discrimination across a vastly larger space of possible Living Domains.
Two verbs have been admitted to the inaugural GGD catalogue. They are selected for their generative breadth across the modern commercial landscape and for the structural distinctness of the relational stances they name.
.gives.you — the verb of transfer. The brand gives the human something the brand legitimately holds: a feeling, a faculty, a tangible asset. Canonical applications: a beverage brand gives the human energy; an AI assistant gives the human perspective; a wellness platform gives the human calm. The verb completes the sentence brand · gives · you · X wherever X is something the brand can demonstrate it delivers.
.brings.you — the verb of delivery. The brand brings the human something the brand reaches out to retrieve. The verb implies effort and journey on the brand’s part, with the brand as the bringer and the human as the recipient. Canonical applications: a logistics platform brings the human provisions; a media company brings the human stories; a travel brand brings the human destinations. The verb completes the sentence brand · brings · you · X wherever the brand legitimately makes the journey to retrieve and deliver X.
The two verbs are deliberately distinct. Gives names what the brand holds and shares. Brings names what the brand goes out and retrieves. Between them, they cover the two most fundamental commercial promise-structures in the modern economy. Additional GGDs may be admitted in future cycles as demand and stewardship considerations permit.
We illustrate the path-qualification overlay with a worked composition. Let aurora be a wellness brand that delivers, demonstrably, a state of mental clarity in the user. The brand applies for the GGD composition aurora.gives.you/clarity.
The qualification proceeds as follows. The verb .gives.you is already admitted to the GGD catalogue (the first-stage qualification was completed at induction). The second-stage qualification is run on the composition. The brand aurora satisfies Oa as a registered, identifiable wellness practice. The verb gives carries Φ = 1.00 — it is fundamentally fostering in transitive English. The path-noun clarity is the qualifying object: it must pass the same protocol applied to a verb-slot Sentient.
Clarity: speakable (passes radio test); concrete embodied semantic (passes Cp); transitive (the brand can demonstrably produce clarity in the user via measurable practices); non-paternalising (passes Rp); prosodically congruent with the brand and verb that precede it (passes Pr). The SRI for the full composition computes in the elite range. The composition is admitted.
The brand now holds aurora.gives.you/clarity as a Living Domain under the GGD tier of the catalogue. Should aurora later apply for an additional composition — aurora.gives.you/focus, aurora.gives.you/rest — each is qualified separately under the same protocol. Each composition admitted joins the brand’s portfolio under the same verb-architecture. The GGD tier accommodates the brand’s full value without diluting the catalogue’s discrimination — because each individual composition was earned.
OBSERVATION 10.1 · THE COMMITMENT-LAYER URL
The traditional URL brand.com/product organises the address around the brand’s filing cabinet. The Living Domain brand.verb.you organises the address around the human relationship. The Generative Grammatical Domain brand.verb.you/promise organises the address around the human benefit. Each step relocates the URL’s organising principle closer to the human. The GGD completes the relocation: the URL is now, literally, a human-centred promise that resolves to a human-centred experience.
The chapter closes with a structural note. The GGD tier is younger than the Sentient tier and admits verbs more sparingly. Each verb admitted to the GGD catalogue carries the weight of opening a whole grammar — and the discipline’s obligation to qualify every composition under that grammar across the catalogue’s lifetime. This is why the inaugural GGD catalogue holds only two verbs, and why subsequent admissions will be considered with the same deliberation Chapter Three brings to single-relationship Sentients. The framework extends. The discipline does not relax.
Across both tiers — the Sentient and the Generative Grammatical Domain — the discipline serves four ends, committed to in the formal record. That the modern world be more meaningful at the layer where humans encounter it, because the address now names what is done. More ethical in what brands and machines are admitted to perform, because admission requires the practice. More purposeful in the relationships AI mediation will increasingly carry, because the verb declares the service before the page even loads. And more beautiful — because language built for the human nervous system has always, in the end, been beautiful, and the address layer is the most recent layer of human language to learn this. The commitment is structural; it follows from the equation L = B × S × U as surely as that equation follows from the requirement of Chapter I.
